Sometimes it’s easier to understand the severity of things by changing perspective. What if all the violence and inequalities in our societies affected men and not women, would we look different upon them then?
Violence against women, inequality in decision-making and discrimination are all closely linked to peacework. Research shows that when women are being excluded from peace negotiations, issues of gender equality are left out of the peace agreements and subsequently also of the new constitutions. This means that the new society, formed by the constitution, doesn’t reflect the interests of 50 percent of the population. And a society that denies half of its population their human rights, is bound to end up in a new spiral of violence and conflict.
In the report Equal Power – Lasting Peace you can read more about women and peacebuilding and the obstacles that women and women’s organizations face when they try to work with these issues.
